McCartney, Weller and Partridge: Love Songs for Valentine’s Day

While there are thousands of love songs one can use to serenade their loved one, most are fairly revolting. Here are three ditties that avoid sappy, corny, gushy sentiments and still manage to tell your significant other just how you feel.

Mayor of Simpleton

Penned by Andy Partridge and found on XTC’s Oranges and Lemons, “Mayor of Simpleton” is a charming and playful love song. While not the best song to lure your Valentine into the bedroom, it’s sweet and sincere nonetheless. This is the perfect love song for a significant other that has a great sense of humor.

You’re The Best Thing

Written during his days performing with the Style Council, Paul Weller’s “You’re the Best Thing” says it all. If the sentiment doesn’t apply to the person you’re with, you may want to reevaluate your relationship.

The song is from the Council’s 1984 album Café Bleu, the band’s official debut released. In America, the album was called My Ever Changing Moods.

Maybe, I’m Amazed

Paul McCartney has probably written move love songs than most composers have written songs. “Maybe, I’m Amazed,” from his 1970 album McCartney, is one of his best. Even though it’s upbeat, this rocker still packs plenty of romance.
